What happens if Ringworm is untreated?

My bf has on on the back of his neck its small and hasn't been there very long but i was just curious as to what would happen if it was left untreated? i know that i will get worse a spread but wat effect does it have on the body ( liver damage heart failure ...etc) and will athletes foot cream work?
